Most persons who engage in same-sex/bisexual behavior in India may not have any self-conscious identity in relation to their sexual behavior/attraction. In this website, the terms 'sexual minorities' and 'GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender/Transsexual)' are used as umbrella terms to denote persons who engage in same-sex/bisexual behavior, or who have same-sex/bisexual attractions or whose gender expression/identity may not be the same as their biological sex. The acronym 'GLBT' has been used as a convenient short label for the diverse spectrum of sexual minority populations. However, same-sex attracted persons or gender-variant persons in India may identify themselves with certain indigenous terms like Kothi rather than as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender/transsexual.
